Misty of Chincoteague

Marguerite Henry discovered Misty in 1946 at Pony Penning Day on Chincoteague Island in Virginia. Misty lived with the Beebe's, who bought her after she made the swim from Assateague. When Marguerite decided she wanted to buy Misty to use in her writing, the Beebe's initially refused. Marguerite insisted that she needed Misty with her to write a book about her, and so the Beebe's consented, providing that their grandchildren,Maureen and Paul, would be included in the book.

With the publication of the book Misty of Chincoteague Misty become an instant celebrity. She visited schools and theaters, always packed with fans. Soon after a movie was even made about her. During all this commotion Misty became the mother of several foals, the most famous of them her last; Stormy. The name is particularly appropriate considering thehorse was born in the midst of a horrible storm, kept in
the kitchen of the Beebe house for safety.

During her time with Marguerite, Misty displayed her distinct personality by favoring inside the house to being outdoors and by charming all those who met her. Marguerite's stories about Misty and Stormy made a lasting impression on all those who couldn't help falling in love with them.
