Maria Rosaria Vitti-Alexander
Professor of Italian, Nazareth College
Professor Maria Rosaria Vitti-Alexander is currently a professor of Italian in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. Previously she taught Italian at the University of Michigan, where she completed her Ph.D. in Italian literature, and at at Middlebury College. A native speaker of Italian, she has published on Pirandello's fiction and on Italian women writers of the 20thcentury.
Alan Pascuzzi
Professor of Art, Palazzo Rucellai, Florence.
Alan pascuzzi has a Ph.D. in Art History. He has been teaching for several American Universities in Florence, Italy. Dr. Pascuzzi heads the art studio at Palazzo Rucellai in Florence where he works as an independent artist.
Mitchell Messina
Associate Professor of Art, Nazareth College
Professor Messina has a Master in Fine Arts from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA, and has exhibited his works in ceramics in Galleries and Museums nationally.
Courses: Students select two courses from the following list.
Beginning/Intermediate Italian (3 credits)
This course will begin with a general review of grammar and construction, followed by closer attention to more advanced constructions and vocabulary. The readings will be short and varied. The Intermediate Italian course is intended for students with at least one year of college Italian.
Twentieth Century Italian Writers (3 credits)
This course introduces the student to 20th century writers from various regions of Italy. Using their works, students will examine and compare north, central, south and insular Italy from the literary perspective, emphasizing cultural and traditional differences. Each author's work is placed in the historical currents of the contemporary period and region of Italy.
Beginning/Intermediate Ceramics (3 credits)
Experimentation with various sculptural and functional handbuilding techniques with a focus on contemporary and historical ceramic history. The students will gain experience in glaze application and kiln loading/firing in the classroom and thorough visiting local potteries and museums.
The Historic Monuments of Italy (3 credits)
Trough traveling to Rome, Florence and Pompeii, this course will explore the rich artistic history of Italy from the ancient Romans to the Renaissance and beyond. With on-site lectures in each city, students will be able to experience and study first-hand the most important historical monuments, churches and museums in Italy.
