VALENCIA PROGRAM COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

SPAN 101 - Elementary Spanish - Essentials of grammar; written and conversational exercises; reading of selected material based on cultural approach and knowledge of Spain and Spanish-America; systematic training in pronunciation. Instruction mainly conducted in Spanish. (Fall, Spring & Summer) Satisfies SPN 100 level course. To be taken concurrently with SPAN 110.

SPAN 110 - Elementary Conversation - A course intended to introduce the student to very simple every day conversational topics. No written work. (Fall, Spring & Summer) Satisfies SPN 100 level course. To be taken concurrently with SPAN 101.

SPAN 201 - Intermediate Spanish - Review of grammar, composition and conversation. Intensive reading of contemporary texts. Outside assignments and conversation. Classes will be mostly conducted in Spanish. (Fall, Spring & Summer) Satisfies SPN 100 level course. To be taken concurrently with SPAN 202.

SPAN 202 - Intermediate Conversation - Conversation arranged among students, with the help of the instructor, on assigned topics dealing with contemporary life and culture. (Fall, Spring & Summer) Satisfies SPN 100 level course. To be taken concurrently with SPAN 201.

SPAN 302 - Advanced Conversation - Upper Division conversation course on assigned topics of popular and technical interest to be given extemporaneously. (Fall, Spring & Summer) Satisfies General Elective.

SPAN 304 - Advanced Grammar and Written Expression - Intensive grammar review and detailed study of Spanish text to prepare for individual oral and written expression. Writing of critical essays. (Fall, Spring & Summer) Satisfies SPN 312.

SPAN 305 - Adv. Spanish Composition and Conversation I - Grammar review covering the following points: the use of "ser" and "estar", personal pronouns, the verb and its complements, the use of prepositions, the use of "por" and "para". Selective reading and writing of essays on assigned topics. Intensive practice of conversation and vocabulary. (Fall only) Satisfies SPN 201.

SPAN 306W - Adv. Spanish Composition and Conversation II - Designed as a continuation of SPAN 305 this course focuses on the following points: the indicative, imperative, and subjunctive verbal modes, nouns, articles and adjectives. Selective reading and writing of essays on assigned topics. Intensive practice of conversation and vocabulary. (Spring only) Satisfies SPN 202W-Writing Intensive.

SPAN 315 - Spanish for Business - Vocabulary and terminology used in business, practice in commercial forms and letter writing: order letters, claim letters, accounting and banking, information about markets, circular letters. Study of the different means of payment: the bill of exchange, commercial contract, bankruptcy and suspension of payments. The structure of a commercial company. The legal forms of companies and their activities. (Fall, Spring & Summer) Satisfies General Elective.

SPAN 325 - Analysis of Texts I - Spanish and Hispanic poetry and theater. Classic poetry: Renaissance and Baroque. Romantic poetry. Contemporary and modern poetry. Hispanic poetry: Modernism. Contemporary Hispanic theater. (Fall only) Satisfies PI in Literature.

SPAN 326 - Analysis of Texts II - Novels, essays, and short stories. Spanish classics. Realists. The Generation of '98. Contemporaries. Hispanics: XIX and XX centuries. (Spring only) Satisfies PII in Literature.

SPAN 327 - Trends and Theories of Spanish Narrative - An introduction to the shapes and forms of Spanish narrative. This bilingual course explores contemporary theories, plot, characters, narrator, point of view, components of setting, and European influences. Lectures will be in English and Spanish. Students may choose to complete coursework and exams in either of the two languages. (Fall and Spring) Satisfies PI in Literature.

The great international styles of the Middle Ages and its special Spanish version. A comparative study of Romanesque and Gothic art styles. SPAN 402 - Spanish Phonetics - The pronunciation of the Spanish language as spoken today by the educated people of Spain and Spanish America. Particular emphasis on vowels, consonants, sound changes, intonation of sentences, Spanish American pronunciation. General concepts of phonetics. Intensity. Quantity. Intonation. Articulation drills. Use of phonetic texts and transcripts. Intonation drills. Etc. (Summer, Fall and Spring) Satisfies General Elective.

SPAN 405 - General Translation - Vocabulary and terminology used in literary texts of general interest: newspapers, magazines, news bulletins, prose, etc. Translation from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English. (Summer, Fall and Spring) Satisfies SPN 300 level course.

SPAN 412 - Golden Age Literature - A detailed study of the Siglo de Oro with special emphasis on Lazarillo de Tormes, Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, and Calderón de la Barca. (Summer and Spring) Satisfies SPN 302.

SPAN 413W - 19th Century Cultural Codes - Neo-classicism. Cultural history. Criticism. Influences of the Golden Age. Romanticism. Restauración. Romantic drama. Comedia de Costumbres. Idealistic realism. Required readings: El sí de las niñas, Don Álvaro o la fuerza del sino, Don Juan Tenorio, and the poetry of Bécquer. SPAN 414A - Philosophical Movements on 20th Century Spanish Literature - From the Generation of '98 to the 1960's. The Generation of '98: Valle-Inclán, Azorín, Unamuno y Baroja. The Generation of '27: Lorca, Aleixandre abd Salinas. The Generation of '36: Post-war literature and social literature. (Summer, Fall and Spring) Satisfies PII in Philosophy.

SPAN 414B - Contemporary Spanish Literature - The writers of present day Spain and their works. A study of contemporary authors including Rosa Regás, Javier Marías, Paloma Pedreró, José Luis Alonso de los Santos, Els Joglars, Felipe Benitez y Ana Rosetti. (Summer, Fall and Spring) Satisfies PII in Literature.

SPAN 414A - The Spanish Novel in the XIX Century - This course concentrates on the Spanish Novel of the 19th century, covering the novel as well as the most important literary figures and works of the Realistic and Naturalistic movements: Valera, Galdós, Blasco Ibañez. (Spring only) Satisfies PII in Literature.

SPAN 415 - Cervantes - A study of the life and works of Miguel de Cervantes with special attention to Don Quijote de la Mancha and its place as a masterpiece of world literature. (Summer, Fall and Spring) Satisfies PII in Literature.

SPAN 425 - 20th Century Spain - The Second Republic (1931). The Civil War (1936-1939). The Franco period: from isolation to international integration. The Marshall Plan. Eisenhower. Transition to democracy. Juan Carlos, King of Spain. Democratic elections. The Spanish Constitution of 1978. Spain in the European Comunity. (Summer, Fall & Spring) Satisfies PII in History.

SPAN 435W - The Jews in Spain - Historical panorama: Roman, Visigoth, and Arab Spain. Principal centers of the Jewish community: Toledo, the Mediterranean community, Sevilla, and Córdoba. The Reconquista. The re-insertion of the Jews in Christian territories. The national unity: the Catholic King and Queen. The Inquisition. The expulsion of the Jews. Contemporary history. The return of the "Sefarditas". Culture and society. Structure of the Jewish-Spanish society. Ghettos. Laws and fueros. Spanish economy and sciences. Medieval art. SPAN 440 - Present Day Spain - As the title indicates this course is a round table discussion class about the various facets of Spain: political, economical, cultural, educational, etc. (Summer, Fall and Spring) Satisfies PI in History.

SPAN 445 - Women in the History of Spain - Historical precedents, pre-Roman times. Women in Arab Spain. Isabel la Católica. The role of women in the conquest and colonization of America. Santa Teresa de Ávila. Women in the industrial revolution. The 18th and 19th centuries. Women in science, politics and literature. Women in present-day Spain. (Summer, Fall and Spring) Satisfies General Elective or Women's Studies Course Elective.

SPAN 450 - History of Spanish Cinema - This course presents a complete historical and panoramic study of Spanish film history from its beginnings in 1896 up until the end of the 20th century. Directors to be studied include: Buñuel, García Berlanga, Suara, Bardem, Miró, Almodóvar, etc. (Spring only) Satisfies PI in Fine Arts.

SPAN 483 - International Internship - Supervised placement with a local institution or organization. Possibilities include: teaching, psychology, speech-pathology, business, law, and social work, etc. Selection process is competitive. Students must contact the Resident Assistant Director in Valencia (via e-mail) to discuss options before registering for this course. Individual meetings and written assignments required. (Fall and Spring) Elective.

ART 262 - History of Spanish Art (in English) - Pre-historic art, art of the primitive "pueblos", Spanish-Romanesque art, styles of the Middle Ages, Velázquez, the "academicismo", Goya, the precursor of modern painting, and present day art. (Summer, Fall and Spring) Satisfies PI in Fine Arts.

HIST 495 - Present Day Spain (in English) - As the title indicates this course is a round table discussion class about the various facets of Spain: political, economical, cultural, educational, etc. (Summer, Fall and Spring) Satisfies PI in History.


All of the listed courses are upper division (200 or 300 level) courses except for SPAN 101, 110, 201 and 202.  All courses taken during the fall or spring semester are three credit hours each.  During the summer program participants must take three courses (9 credits) in Valencia but will only receive 6 credits at Nazareth College because the number of class hours during the Summer Session in Valencia is less than a regular semester at Nazareth College. Students will receive 3 Nazareth College credits for two of the classes and 0 Nazareth College credits for the third class.  In order for the 6 Nazareth College credits to be awarded, the students must pass the third course with at least a C grade. Unless otherwise indicated, all lectures, readings, coursework and examinations are in Spanish.

Please note that final course offerings each semester are based on enrollment. All efforts will be made to ensure that students can take the classes they request. However, in some cases, students may need to select different courses if some of their original selections are not included in the final offering.

Students who wish to minor in Spanish are required to complete the following:
