Bio 410 - Cell Biology

The images shown below were collected, enhanced and annotated by students in our cell biology course (BIO 410/410L). Images include microscopic views of protistan specimens and mitotic figures from both whitefish blastulas and onion (Allium) root tips. Images of osmotic flow in Elodea cells also are provided. The equipment used in the class was purchased with funds from an NSF ILI grant (DUE-9750521) awarded to Drs. Witz and Temple in 1997and an Alden Trust Grant awarded to them in 2006.  Images were captured with an Hitachi HP-D50 Digital Video camera coupled to a Dell  PC equipped with a frame grabber card. The images were enhanced and annotated with Image Pro Plus software. Linear and area measurements also were taken with ImagePro. Changes in Elodea cell volume over time were used to indicate rates of osmotic flow in solutions of different concentrations.  After processing, these images were included in student laboratory reports.
