RILM:  A Brief Introduction

Database Description

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature (published by Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale, New York) indexes scholarly and professional literature relevant to the study of music. Over five hundred journals are indexed in RILM, along with books, catalogues, conference proceedings, dissertations, Festschriften, discographies, and selected audiovisual materials. Selected concert reviews and recording notes are also included. Abstracts (brief summaries of the content) are provided for most citations.

Literature on the teaching of music is also included. Music education materials are usually indexed in RILM using the terms "pedagogy" or "pedagogical". Literature relevant to the study of music therapy is also indexed in RILM.

RILM is an international database that includes items published in over 200 languages. Title and abstract translations are provided in English. Be alert for alternative spellings - the Russian composer Tchaikovsky, for example, also appears in RILM under the spelling "Cajkovskij".

Years of coverage are from 1967 to the present, updated monthly.

Constructing Your Search Strategy

The search page is set up to allow you to actually construct your search and fine-tune it to obtain optimal results.  The boxes make use of “Boolean operators” to “explain” to the database the desired relationship between concepts in your search.  Here are some examples:

AND insures that terms on either side of the AND are included in the same “hit”:
string pedagogy AND Suzuki
OR allows for alternative terms for the same concept, thereby broadening your search:
teenagers OR adolescents
NOT excludes terms you do not want in your search results:
trouvères NOT troubadours

You can also use “wildcards” to pick up plurals and other word variations.  For example, an asterix * at the end of the root of a word such as child* will retrieve child, children, childhood, etc.

You can also use a question mark to account for variations in spelling within words - for example, wom?n will retrieve woman and women.

For more information about the use of Boolean operators and wildcard characters in RILM, click on the database help icon located above the RILM search menu.

The default search is the Keyword search, which searches title, abstract, and descriptors (subject headings).  However you can direct the database to search specific "fields" by making selections from the pull down boxes.  In the sample entries shown below, each labeled area (e.g., Author, Title, Source, etc.) is a "field".

Limiting Your Search

Below the three search boxes, you will see a number of standard limiting options. Year allows you to specify a range of years within which the items retrieved were published. To limit by years, enter the range of years - for example - 1998-2004.

Two additional limiting options are Document Type (which allows you to limit to books or articles, among other formats), and Language Phrase. Language Phrase refers to the language in which the items in your search results were originally published. RILM usually provides an English translation of the title and abstract (if available), even if the original publication is not in English.

Options to limit by availability include the option to limit to Nazareth's "subscriptions". Please note that RILM does not link to all of the Nazareth library's holdings. Verify the holdings of Nazareth's library by using either the WebPAC or Find Journals search boxes on the library's home page.

The final limiting option on the search menu is limit by "Library code". This refers to a three-letter code assigned to identify specific libraries. A link is provided to a search menu used to identify library codes. In RILM, this limiting option is frequently not accurate, however, and we do not recommend it as a limiting option.

Sample Entries from the RILM Database

Entries in RILM display a "Document Type" label, which identifies the format of the item indexed - e.g. article in a periodical, book (also called a monograph), doctoral dissertation, review or other format. In the examples below, this information has been highlighted.

Subject Headings or "See References"

In a simple keyword search with no limits may result in entries that are not citations. Typically, these "see" references (if there are any) appear at the beginning of your list of results. The example below is alerting you to the fact that there is an alternative spelling used in RILM for the name of the Russian composer Tchaikovsky.

A suggestion: Copy and paste the alternative term into your search - this will insure that the accent marks are accurate.

Journal Article Abstract

Source (highlighted in red below) identifies the journal citation, including the title of the journal, the volume number, the issue number, the date of the issue, and the pages on which the article appears. To find out whether or not the Nazareth library owns Acta Musicologica, go to the library's home page and enter Acta Musicologica as a title in the Find Journals search box.

If this article is not owned by Nazareth's library, it can be ordered through ILLIAD, the library's web-based Interlibrary Loan service.

N.B. The ISSN number shown below is a unique number used to identify journals. It is NOT a call number - that is, it does not identify a location on the shelf. The ILLIAD online request form for articles ("Request a Photocopy") has a space for ISSN number. If you can supply an ISSN number, it may expedite your request - however, it is not absolutely necessary.

On modality in trouvere melodies

Source:

Acta musicologica, vol. 71, no.1 Jan-June 1999. p. 76-81. ISSN: 0001-6241

Special Features:

music

Language:

English

Class:

Theory, analysis, and composition: Tuning, temperament, scale structures

Abstract:

Analysis of the some 2,000 melodies inventoried in the author's Trouvere lyrics with melodies: Complete comparative edition, shows that the use of modality in this repertoire differs considerably from way modality is treated in Gregorian chant. The distribution of the modes shifts (with more use of modes V-VIII and almost no use of modes III-IV); the range is often expanded so as to combine authentic and plagal; there is modulation from one mode to another; and transposition occurs within every one of the modes (shifts by a fourth or fifth up or down, or, less frequently, by a second, seventh, or octave). Five cases in which it is difficult to determine the modality are discussed.(Skoggard, Carl)

Dissertation Abstract

In the example shown below, the degree (PhD, Musicology), the name of the university that granted the author's degree, and the date of the degree have been highlighted for emphasis. The pagination (246 p.) refers to the length of the dissertation. Most dissertations are book-length.

Dissertations are often not widely available, and thus usually must be ordered through ILLIAD, the library's web-based Interlibrary Loan service. However, you may want to try searching under the author's name in RILM, and in WorldCat (a different database). Individuals sometimes publish articles based on their dissertation research, or the dissertation itself may be published as a book.

Abstract for a Review of a Recording

According to the publisher of RILM, reviews are included only if they are deemed to be of "scholarly interest". RILM, therefore, is not a comprehensive index of reviews. Academic Search Elite, Humanites Abstracts, and the New York Times Backfile are three databases that you may want to search if you are searching for reviews. The search engine in the database JSTOR also allows you to limit your search to reviews. (Link to the library's list of licensed databases recommended for music.)

In the example below, the Source information has been highlighted for emphasis. This example is a little confusing, because Romance Philology is identifed as a "series". Search for the series title in the WebPAC, the library's catalog. A search box and a link to the WebPAC are included on the library's home page.

This review appeared in volume 38 (XXXVIII), issue number 3 (1985), on pages 419-21. Any review not owned by Nazareth's library may be ordered through ILLIAD, the library's web-based interlibrary loan system.
