The guest speaker was Tom Burgie, a class of 2004 Nazareth College graduate with a post-baccalaureate in Mathematics Education. Tom is also a retired USAF Colonel.
Tom addressed that audience with a presentation entitled, "I just want to fly jets! Why do I need all this math?"
Colonel Burgie was born in Battle Creek, Michigan. After finishing High School in Charlotte, Michigan, he attended the U.S. Air Force Academy, leading to a 27 year career as an officer in the Air Force. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering Mechanics, and a Master of Science Degree in Space Operations, Orbital Dynamics. While in the Air Force he worked in numerous career fields, including supersonic jet instructor pilot, heavy cargo jet pilot, space operations expert, and college professor. He held many leadership positions including Director of Operations, Navstar Global Positioning System, Deputy Operations Group Commander, Undergraduate Pilot Training Wing, and Commander, Air Force ROTC training detachment. He lives in South Bristol with his wife, Lynore, and son, Nathan. They also have an adult daughter, Brea, and son Brent.
