Assessments consist of the following:
(a) Ungraded
- Reading -- each unit will have suggested reading assignments. I
expect that you will work in-chapter problems as you read the text (see #3).
Follow the links BELOW to see the reading and daily HW assignments for
the semester.
- Informal Assessment -- From time to time, techniques to assess your progress
will be employed in an ungraded, informal
fashion (e.g. peer evaluations, minute papers, fuzziest point, etc.).
- Pre-laboratory exercises -- should be completed in your laboratory
notebook and will be discussed in lab.
(B) Graded
- Homework notebook -- any problems that you work on (in-chapter and
suggested end of chapter problems) should be compiled in a SEPARATE
notebook. Your success is directly tied to the amount of problems that
you work. 30-45 minutes per day will allow you to stay on top of
the routine work required for this course. Remember: PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!
- Homework assignments -- 3 of these throughout
the semester are completed in addition to your daily homework assignments.
- Laboratory follow-up exercises (LFUs) -- these assignments will posted on
the course website and should be handed in at the assigned date/time.
- Exams -- multiple question exams that will be completed
in class and possibly with a take-home portion (at the instructors
discretion). Start time will be 7:00 am for the exams and will be
handed in by 9:15 am (2 hr and 15 min).
- Final Exam -- cumulative exam taken at the end of the semester consisting
of in-class and possibly take-home portions.
- Formal Report -- each of you will write up a formal report for the semester project. You should plan on composing at least one rough draft which
will be reviewed in consultation with your laboratory instructor prior to composition of the final
report. These reports should follow the manuscript format for an ACS
journal.
- Poster -- each team may present a poster on the semester project
at a time/place TBA at the end of the semester.
