Norway Spruce Tree Description

The Norway Spruce tree 40-65' tall in Midwestern U.S., but can be over 100 feet tall in Europe, with characteristic drooping branches (3). The diameter may reach up to 2-3 feet on older, more mature trees. Needles are dark green, 1/2"-1" long, with sharp pointed ends (1).

Location

In front of the French house near East Avenue as well as near Carroll Hall by North Campus Entrance.

Native HabitatNorway Spruce Pinecone and Branch

Native to Europe and Scandinavian countries. Now can be found throughout much of Canada and most of Northern U.S. (4).

Growing Conditions

Temperate and cool climates, moist and fertile soil.  The optimal pH range is 3.7 to 6.5.  Usually found among deciduous or coniferous forests (3).

Economic Importance

This tree's wood was used for furniture and violin sound boards. The pulp is an important ingredient in many paper making industries. Young Norway Spruce shoots are used to make spruce beer as well. This tree is also one of the most important and highly regarded Christmas trees in the world.  Millions of Norway Spruce around the world are sold to decorate houses during the Christmas season. This is a large market for the Norway Spruce and many small businesses thrive on this seasonal use (2).

  Ethnobotany Information

Burgundy pitch, the resin from the bark, is used in medicinal compounds (2).
